Assistant Professor

The Department of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the general area of environmental geochemistry. Specializations might include, but are not limited to: mineralogy, low-temperature (bio)geochemistry, and isotope geochemistry. We especially welcome applicants whose research relates to climate change solutions. Relevant (bio)geochemical processes of focus may include, but are not limited to: those that affect elemental cycles, carbon dynamics, water quality, mineral resources, (bio)remediation, and energy solutions. We are particularly interested in applicants who combine a focus on understanding fundamental processes with a state-of-the- art laboratory, modeling, and/or field research program that provides synergy with existing research activities at Dartmouth, including in the Arthur L. Post-Doc Position:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Department of Earth Sciences to study the interaction of clay minerals with marine microbes. This position is part of a multi-disciplinary program evaluating the extent to which clay minerals can be utilized to recruit marine biological pump to sequester atmospheric carbon. We are studying the interaction of clay minerals with dissolved organic carbon, bacteria, and phytoplankton. The person in this position will work with Dr. Mukul Sharma (Professor of Earth Sciences, Dartmouth) and collaborate with Dr. George O'Toole (Elmer R. Pfefferkorn, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Dartmouth), and Dr. Erik Zinser (Associate Professor of Microbiology, University of Tennessee) to elucidate the interaction between clay minerals-biopolymers-bacteria-phytoplankton in lab microcosms.

Responsibilities include using geochemical, microbiological, and genomic techniques to evaluate nutrient release, organo-clay hybrid ('floc") formation, impact on microbial community structure, and gas evolution that occur following clay addition to seawater.

The selected candidate is expected to begin as soon as possible.  The initial duration of the position is two years.

Research Scientist:

Applications are invited for a Research Scientist position in the Department of Earth Sciences with a joint appointment at the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society. We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative individual to engage in a range of research activities with the overarching goal of directly removing and sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide on land and/or in the ocean. We are especially interested in those who have studied water-rock-microbe interaction, marine gel production and carbon cycle, or weathering reactions towards increasing ocean alkalinity. The person in this position will work with Professor Mukul Sharma and engage across the Irving Institute for Energy and Society.

The selected candidate is expected to begin as soon as possible.  The initial duration of the position is two years. This is a full-time non-tenure-track appointment.

Laboratory Technician - Level III

The individual will support the PI in conducting experiments to sequester atmospheric CO2.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelors with a major in Biology, Geobiology, or Earth Sciences, plus 1-2 year(s) of of relevant laboratory or science experience experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Competence in several laboratory methods, procedures and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments, e.g. ICP-OES, XRD, SEM.
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment and good organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.

Preferred qualifications

  • Training in Geobiology, Marine Microbiology, Chemical Oceanography
