Peatlands have recently been getting more attention in the media and global forums for their role in climate change and mitigation efforts. I will provide an overview of peatland ecosystems and their carbon cycle. This typically includes both carbon sequestration in peat (i.e., carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere) and methane emissions to the atmosphere, and so they have countervailing cooling and warming impacts on climate. Two methods for quantifying the net climate impact will be presented. After reviewing the global peatland carbon dioxide and methane budgets, the carbon cycle and climate impacts of peatland disturbance will be explored through two case studies: thawing permafrost in the north, and conversion to oil palm production in the tropics.
